Extra-Large O Ring Segmented Step-Vulcanization

For oversized O-rings and sealing profiles, conventional manufacturing often requires large-diameter molds and high-capacity vulcanizing presses. Our segmented vulcanization process provides a more flexible alternative for applications where these conventional methods are impractical.

The sealing ring is assembled and vulcanized progressively in multiple sections. Dedicated tooling is used to accurately align each joint and control the vulcanization conditions, ensuring strong and permanent connections between individual sections. The result is a seamless continuous sealing ring with stable dimensions, reliable joint strength, and precisely located mounting holes where required.

By manufacturing the ring in sections rather than using a single oversized mold, this process reduces tooling requirements and eliminates the need for exceptionally large press equipment. It also allows us to produce O-rings with very large diameters or non-standard dimensions according to customer drawings and application requirements.

This solution is particularly suitable for large tank flanges, pressure vessels, industrial doors, wind power equipment, rail transportation, heavy machinery, marine equipment, and other applications requiring large-diameter custom seals.

Description

Extra-Large O-Rings – Segmented Step-Vulcanization Technology

Manufacturing very large O-rings can be challenging when conventional methods require oversized molds, high-tonnage presses, or mechanically joined sections. Our segmented step-vulcanization process provides a practical alternative for producing large-diameter sealing rings in customized dimensions.

How the Process Works

Instead of forming the entire O-ring in one oversized mold, the ring is manufactured progressively in controlled sections. A compact forming and vulcanizing setup is used together with a dedicated linear tooling system. Each section is accurately formed, positioned, and vulcanized before the process advances to the next position.

This step-by-step approach allows the individual sections to become part of one continuous sealing ring. Positioning holes, mounting features, and other details can also be incorporated during the process with controlled spacing and repeatable accuracy.

Key Manufacturing Advantages

Large O-Rings Without Oversized Molds
The process eliminates the need for a full-size mold matching the complete diameter of the finished O-ring. This makes the production of very large and non-standard diameters possible using comparatively compact manufacturing equipment.

Hot-Vulcanized Section Connections
Rather than relying on adhesive bonding or conventional cold joints, the rubber sections are joined through controlled heat and pressure during vulcanization. This creates a durable connection suitable for demanding sealing applications and helps maintain consistent performance throughout the sealing loop.

Flexible Dimensions and Configurations
The step-vulcanization method is well suited to custom diameters, large circumferences, and O-rings incorporating regularly spaced holes or other installation features. Dimensions can be developed according to customer drawings and specific assembly requirements.

Reduced Tooling Requirements
Using sectional tooling instead of a single oversized mold can significantly reduce tooling investment and simplify production of large sealing rings, particularly for low-volume or customized applications.

Typical Applications

This manufacturing method is suitable for large-diameter sealing applications where conventional molding methods are difficult or uneconomical, including:

  • Large storage tank manholes, covers, and flange connections
  • Pressure vessels and industrial access doors
  • Large inspection hatches and enclosure systems
  • Rail transportation equipment
  • Wind power and heavy industrial machinery
  • Marine and offshore equipment
  • Other customized large-scale sealing systems

Our segmented step-vulcanization capability allows large O-rings to be manufactured to customer-specific dimensions while maintaining controlled joint quality, dimensional consistency, and reliable sealing performance.
